Tag Team Weekly Roundup and Power Ratings: WWE is giving interesting spotlights to wrestlers in teams

WWE.com

It was an interesting week to see wrestlers in tag teams and factions get spotlight in key parts of its shows, and even main event Raw and SmackDown.

While Judgment Day could use a few more high profile wins, they continue to feel like a big deal. Damian Priest did not disappoint in the bright lights in the main event in taking on Seth Rollins for the new championship, other than coming up short (which was to be expected with Seth just winning the title). Moreover, it looks like we're setting up for a Seth-Finn Balor match for the gold at Money in the Bank, with the continuity of Seth ending Finn's run as the first Universal Champion helping write a compelling story.

The continuing crumbling of The Bloodline once again headlined SmackDown, and even if we didn't get resolution to the "who will Jey Uso choose" storyline, Main Event Jey got just that (and a great match) against US Champ Austin Theory. He looked like a worthy champion too until a ref bump, Pretty Deadly and continuing Bloodline drama led to one more loss for the family.

When not holding the unified tag team title, Kevin Owens can put on absolute bangers as a solo act, with his outstanding match with Gunther being the latest example. KO was very protected in the loss, since The Ring General never otherwise resorts to the rollup to win, and with a distraction as well. Any time WWE wants to put these two back in the ring is welcome.

Over on SmackDown, we saw wins for Money in the Bank slots from people otherwise in tag teams and factions in Damage CTRL's Bayley and Iyo Sky, LWO's Santos Escobar and Brawling Brute Butch. It's a welcome change from tag team members normally being used to put over singles stars.

All in all, being in a tag team or faction was hardly an impediment this week. That may well be a recognition of how deep WWE's roster is that even some of its best acts aren't solo wrestlers. And that is a good thing.

The following Tag Team Power Rankings take into account wins, power and placement of segments, recentness of appearances, creative direction and momentum for teams and factions.

WWE Tag Team Power Rankings through June 9:

1. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn (last week: 1)

Pro: Still the tag champs for both brands. KO's match with Gunther rocked.
Con: KO lost, but was fairly protected in the process. How many times does the dominant Ring General win off a distraction and rollup?

2. Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler (2)

Pro: The new women's main-roster tag champs successfully defended their title in a good match with Katana Chance and Kayden Carter. May well unify the WWE and NXT titles next week.
Con: The NXT champs got to stand tall on them this week.

3. Judgment Day (3)

Pro: The faction once again got plenty of time on Raw, with Damian Priest wrestling in the main event, an intriguing story developing with Finn Balor and Dom and Rhea setting up a program with Cody Rhodes.
Con: Despite looking great in his match, Priest lost. And what do we make of Finn coming out even after Damian asked him not to?

4. Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn (4)

Pro: Still NXT women's tag champs. Got the better of the WWE women's tag champs this week.
Con: Probably losing the title unification match.

5. Gallus (5)

Pro: Still the NXT men's tag champs.
Con: Still just kinda floating around without a meaty program.

6. Imperium (7)

Pro: Gunther continues to amaze in his Intercontinental Championship run, winning a fantastic match against Kevin Owens, thanks to support from his henchmen.
Con: Matt Riddle put the hurt on Giovanni Vinci and might have next.

7. Damage CTRL (not ranked)

Pro: Both Bayley and Iyo Sky advanced into the Money in the Bank match.
Con: That's totally where the split is happening, right?

8. LWO (not ranked)

Pro: Santos Escobar won his way into the Money in the Bank match.
Con: That feels like a reward in itself for the great work of he and the LWO but he hardly seems like a favorite in the match.

9. Indus Sher (9)

Pro: Still being featured as fearsome, taking out f/k/a Hurt Business before the bell even rang.
Con: Would be great to see them in an actual competitive match.

10. Brawling Brutes (not ranked)

Pro: Butch defeated Baron Corbin to get into the Money in the Bank ladder match.
Con: It's nice for them to consider his popularity for a match in London, but hard to see him winning.

Best tag segment of the week: Gunther-KO was a heck of a match, which still has room for an even better match. Might not have the most story behind it, but very enjoyable.

Grade: A-

WWE is using its tag teams in a lot of different spots, although using them in traditional tag team matches would be wonderful too.
